Calling for Help

  • Call Campus Safety from a Smith landline by dialing x5555.
  • Call or text 911 from any cell phone.
  • Use an emergency call box/blue light phone by pushing the big red button on any of these devices. This will call Campus Safety immediately and direct them to your location.

When You Call for Help

  • The dispatcher may give you advice on how to best keep yourself safe and out of harm’s way until help arrives.
  • Make sure you notify dispatch of any safety hazards that may impact the first responders. If there are hazardous materials, something they can trip over or inadvertently hurt themselves with, or someone with a weapon, for example, the first responder should know about this before they get on-site.
  • If you can, wait or send someone outside your building to meet the first responders to help guide them to where they need to go. This can be especially helpful in medical emergencies.
  • Expect a five to ten minute response time, at a minimum. After you call for help, it may feel like it takes a very long time for help to arrive, but please be patient.
  • Keep an eye on the clock and call back after 10 minutes if you’re still waiting.
  • Your call may be disconnected or discontinued—please wait until a first responder arrives and call back if there are any new developments or if you need anything else. Always advocate for yourself and your safety.
