Biography

Nancy Eve Cohen is an award-winning multimedia journalist who enjoys sharing her knowledge and love of journalism with Smith College students. She teaches Journalism: Principles and Practice. 

Cohen has reported on a wide variety of issues, such as repatriation to Native Nations in South Dakota and efforts to address climate change in Massachusetts, injured sea birds after an oil spill in Louisiana and recovery of flood victims in Vermont, fatal police shootings and social justice advocacy, the experience of a COVID nurse and disputes over a toxic waste cleanup, recycling in the United States, and the rescue of orphaned wildlife.

She has served as a senior reporter at New England Public Media (NEPM), as an editor at NPR in Washington, D.C., and as the managing editor of the Northeast Environmental Hub, a collaboration of public radio stations in New England and New York.

Her investigative reporting was recognized with an Edward R. Murrow Regional Award for Hard News, along with first place awards for features and spot news from the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA) and the Society of Professional Journalists. She won two Gracie Awards from the Alliance for Women in Media and was named the Environmental Reporter of the Year by the Rivers Alliance of Connecticut. She contributed to Vermont Public’s award-winning coverage of Tropical Storm Irene and Hurricane Sandy. 

Earlier in her career, as part of a camera crew, she recorded sound for news and documentaries in Russia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, and in Sarajevo during the Bosnian war.
