Carol Berner

Biography
Carol Berner joined Smith's Department of Education and Child Study in 2004 and teaches courses focusing on the integration of theory and practice in literacy, child and adolescent development, methods of instruction and education history. Carol’s teaching experience spans kindergarten through graduate school in public, private, and community-based organizations.
Carol earned an A.B. from Harvard University and an M.S.Ed. from Bank Street College of Education, where she served on the graduate faculty from 1999 to 2004. Carol worked with K–12 students and teachers in New York City and Connecticut as a public school classroom teacher, faculty coach, and curriculum designer.
Carol is regional coordinator of River of Words, a place-based education initiative integrating environmental science, literacy and the arts. She engages youth in inquiry-based environmental education through partnerships with public schools and community organizations including the Mill River Greenway Initiative and the Water Inquiry project of Smith College.
