Book Talk by Patricia Owens, Oxford University
Thursday, April 23, 2026 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, and weaving together personal, institutional, and intellectual narratives, Owens’ book documents key moments and locations in the effort to forge international relations as a separate academic discipline in Britain. She finds that women’s ideas and influence were first marginalized and later devalued, ignored, and erased. Her book received two prestigious awards from the International Studies Association in 2026: the Francesco Guicciardini Prize for Best Book in Historical International Relations, and the Best Book award from the ISA Theory Section. From 2026-29, Professor Owens will hold a major research fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust.
