Virtual Museum of Ancient Inventions

Today, “technology” often evokes smartphones, AI assistants, and virtual reality. Yet some of the most ancient technologies—the wheel, the rope, the loom, the bridge—remain essential to modern life. In the Ancient Inventions course, students brought history to life by recreating these ancient technologies from scratch, combining hands-on engineering with a journey into the ingenuity of the past.

Curating the Past

The Virtual Museum of Ancient Inventions is a project that was begun by students in the course Ancient Inventions, first taught by Marjorie Senechal, which was offered at Smith from 1997 through 2004.

Many thanks to Marjorie Senechal, Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Program in the History of the Sciences, who made it all possible by daring to do something no one had ever done before; Greg Young, Director of the Clark Science Center Machine Shop, for his unerring advice and many hours of patient assistance; and Stan Sherer, whose expert photography has allowed us to present even the oddest of items as works of art.
